International Language Nazi Day

By virtue of my own cantankerosity, I hereby ordain and establish the 3rd day of October (being the 10th month of the Gregorian calendar despite its name) as International Language Nazi Day.

Henceforth, on every October 3rd, all those who feel duty-bound to condemn the misuse and bastardization of language by their friends, enemies, neighbors, and loved ones are encouraged to rant and rave about grammar, pronunciation, scansion, orthography, semantics, phraseology, diction, punctuation, &c. A Message to Muslims: Justice Requires Proportionality

As regular readers of my blog know, I am a Christian. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often referred to as the Mormon church. I am no expert on Islam. However, I also have been fortunate enough to have a number of acquaintances and friends who are Muslims. They have all been good, decent people.

As a Mormon, I understand what it is like to have my beliefs mocked and that which I consider sacred blasphemed and scorned. The number one Broadway musical in the United States is a profanity and blasphemy saturated mockery of my religion, its founding prophet, and of God. And that is just a recent example. So I empathize with the hurt and outrage Muslims feel when Islam and its prophet and God are mocked.

As I wrote in my previous post, I recognize that there are many different branches and schools of Islam and that it is wrong to attribute the actions and views of one faction to all.

But even understanding that, I am repelled and shocked by violence perpetrated in the name of Islam and an apparently large number of Muslims who believe that violence is a moral and just response when their religion or prophet is ridiculed or mocked.

My message to those Muslims who justify or participate in these kinds of violent responses is this:

Your support for violence in response to blasphemy is not only immoral and unjust, but it is also contrary to the teachings of the Qurʾān and violates the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. Continue reading

A Message to Christians: Islam Is Not Monolithic

At times like these it is important to remember that there are many, many different factions and sects of Islam, just like there are many sects of Christianity.

It would be wrong to attribute the actions of some radical Christian sect to all Christians. We would never confuse Latter-day Saints with Westboro Baptists nor Catholics with Branch Davidians. But we often fail to distinguish between Muslim sects. So we should be careful not to attribute the actions of some extreme Muslim sect to all Muslims. It is appropriate to condemn evildoing, but we must be careful not to apply our condemnation too broadly.

Lego Replica of the Salt Lake City Temple of the LDS Church

A couple of months ago we were visiting friends in Springville Utah, and using my phone I snapped a few photos of the amazing replica of the Salt Lake City Temple that my friend David has built using Legos. I need to go back with a good camera and take some better photos, but for now I thought all the Mormon Lego fans would love his work.  It took him years to build. His attention to detail is fantastic. Enjoy!

Thoughts on the Word of Wisdom

Just a couple of weeks ago, on August 19th, my wife and I were assigned to give sermons to our LDS congregation on the topic of the Mormon health guidelines known as the Word of Wisdom.

Just weeks later, the LDS church published a statement clarifying that the church does not forbid drinking caffeinated drinks:

“…the Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine.  The Church’s health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and “hot drinks” — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee.”

Whether Mormons should consume caffeine has long been debated among members of the church, so the statement has caused a bit of buzz on blogs and in media.

The following is an adaptation of the words I prepared and delivered on the topic.

Blood on the Doorposts

When the Lord sent Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, he brought many terrible plagues upon the land. In preparation for the final plague, the Lord commanded the people of Israel to prepare a male lamb, without blemish, and kill it and then mark their doorposts with its blood. Continue reading
