Review: The Mormons Part 1 on PBS

Naturally, there has been a lot of buzz among latter-day saints about the two part documentary produced on PBS by The American Experience and Frontline about The Mormons. Latter-day saints have somewhat of a persecution complex (and not without some good reasons) so of course there has been a lot of speculation about just how balanced this particular documentary would be. I think that a lot of the speculation has been relatively optimistic.

If you missed it or want to re-watch parts of it, the documentary is available online at http://www.pbs.org/mormons/view/ .

Monday night I watched the first two-hour installment and had mixed feelings about it. I have yet to watch the second installment and will post a review when I have.

Conspiracy Theories

I have not seen the movies “V for Vendetta” and “Children of Men” nor have I listened to “Year Zero,” the new album released this week by the explicit rock band Nine Inch Nails. And because I avoid movies and music with “R” rated or explicit content, I am not likely to in the future. However, from what I can gather from news reports, critical reviews, and conversations with people who are familiar with them, they all attempt to push into the mainstream a view that is popular among the most radical liberals and a few of the most reactionary conservatives: that current events, the War on Terrorism, and the policies of Conservative Republicans and especially the Bush administration are intended to overturn and replace our constitutional Republic with some kind of corporate oligarchy or Christian theocracy.

This view is rampant among the more radical, liberal or progressive blogs and forums.

I think that a conspiratorial view of current events and of history has a certain natural appeal. It plucks the same psychological strings that make gossip attractive and wide spread.

Happy Easter!

And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them.

And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them,

Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

And ye are witnesses of these things.

Luke 24:33-48

LDS General Conference April 2007

This weekend we are watching the April General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each conference, I try to post links to MP3 audio and other resources as they become available for those who were unable to listen or watch.

This is the first time that we have watched the conference through live, online streaming video from byu.tv . For the most part it has worked great, except for a bug where it stops every half an hour or so and says that the video stream is “suspended.” We discovered, however, that by simply reloading the page, the video would continue. So we only missed a couple of sentences every half an hour or so. One annoyance was that every time we had to reload the page, the video player displayed a 15-30 second nagvertisement encouraging us to support byu.tv with a financial donation. We would have missed fewer sentences if we didn’t have to wait through it every time we had to load the page.

If you haven’t been able to watch or listen to the conference, or if you aren’t LDS and would like to listen to the words of the living Prophet, Twelve Apostles, and other general authorities of the church, watch this post for updates with links to MP3s and Video Archives as they become available.

These links are to the earliest available MP3 Audio files. As MP3 files are made available on the official church website, the links will be changed to point there.

Back After An Unexpected Hiatus

I realize that I haven’t posted any new material since the beginning of February, and I apologize. I have a whole list of topics that I have been meaning to write about, but with a new baby, a difficult post-delivery recovery for my wife, the worst cold-season we have had, and increased work load, I think an unexpected hiatus from blogging was appropriate. Family needs have to come first.
