For the last couple of years, the church has provided official audio and video podcasts of the conference sessions. You can subscribe to the podcasts to receive conference on your iPod or in a podcast enabled feed reader like Google Reader. In past years KSL has also provided a podcast.

In my experience, the KSL podcast sessions often become available shortly after each session ends, but they have been very unreliable.  The official audio podcast has sometimes been posted remarkably fast after the sessions, but it has also been a little inconsistent. Understandably, the video podcast posts a few days later during the following week.

Live Video, streamed over the Internet, as well as archived recordings of completed sessions is available on demand through BYU and KSL. We have watched the conference through BYU.tv several years in a row now and love it. The Video technology has continually improved and the official video streams from the church website are using the same technology for the first time this year. The video player only works on Windows or Mac OS X. Last year, KSL appeared to be using the same player as BYU.tv, so they may all be actually the same source. Also, starting last year church officially provides a Video Podcast (see the podcast section below).

The official podcasts include last week’s General Relief Society meeting, but strangely the video podcast, even a week later appears to only contain audio, not video.

Official Audio Feed
Official Video Feed

During recent sessions of conference I have been linking to the Podcast available through KSL.com. The KSL podcast is great because the sessions become available very quickly, usually before the subsequent session has started. However, the feed from KSL is very poorly managed. This last conference it worked fine for the Saturday sessions, but none of the Sunday sessions ever were posted. It makes me wonder if the feed is being generated by hand and someone forgot to update it.

In any case, extrapolating from the naming of the mp3 files for Saturday sessions, I was able to guess the names of the Sunday session mp3 files, which did in fact exist shortly after each session, and link to them from my blog.

The advantage of the official feeds from lds.org is that they will likely be better maintained, and that they offer individual mp3s of each talk rather than semi-sessional mp3s like the KSL feed.

I wonder if the new official feeds will update as quickly as the KSL feed? It would be great if the mp3 for each talk posted shortly after the talk completed.

Once again we are enjoying the General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Not everyone can listen to or watch the conference as it is broadcast, but internet technology has progressed to the point that anyone can participate and listen to the words of the living Prophet, Twelve Apostles, and other general authorities of the church regardless of their schedule.

This is the way we are watching conference this year. Our first time watching this way was last April, and we experienced some technical bugs, but this fall the experience has been, so far, bug-free.
