Dear Mr. Wilson,

I just discovered your blog and I am extremely pleased with what I see. Your analysis of “socialism with a smile” is spot-on. If you haven’t already heard of it, a man by the name of Ludwig von Mises wrote a suberb book entitled, simply enough, “Socialism”. It is a complete philosophical demolishment of socialism, case-by-case, point-by-point, and principle-by-principle. I highly recommend it. On par, if not more rigorous, with “The Road to Serfdom”.

Velska,

Your deduction is oversimple. I too dislike the Big Business corruption facilitated by my government. While in general I agree with the platform of the Republican Party, I find many of the actual practices of the party abhorrent.

However, the redistribution of wealth is not a solution to big business corruption.

The people running government are just as prone to corruption as those in big business and giving them immoral power to forcibly redistribute the wealth doesn’t fix or curtail the corruption, it only changes the theater in which the corruption plays out, and increases the power with which it has to influence others.

Take for instance China, according to one observer :

“It’s actually not uncommon in China for people in one company to actively “tattle” on their rivals and get them into political trouble in order to gain a competitive business advantage. I saw it happen several times in the media and entertainment worlds when I was living and working in Beijing. This is one reason the communist party will stick around longer than many outsiders think. Businesses get greedy and try to manipulate the authoritarian system to their advantage, rather than working together to make the whole thing more fair, accountable, and transparent.”

Ah, so you prefer the kind of government that gives a free ride to Big Oil, Big Tobacco and creates tax incentives to manufacture and buy gas-guzzling pick-ups and SUV’s to make sure that we will be more dependent on Big Oil.
